Unable to reproduce using different characters in email addresses.
Everything went fine on my side (PacketFence 3.0.1)

Can you provide more steps to reproduce?

From what log file did you took the error? This is not logs/packetfence.log's format.
Was there a special character expanded in shell in the email address?
-e is perl's eval flag.. why would mail eval'ed something?

As a work-around, setting an smtpserver= under [alerting] can probably fix it.

It was a problem on the client's side (MTA config).
