PacketFence Integrates with OPSWAT GEARS For Advanced Compliance Enforcement
October 22, 2014

The integration with GEARS and open source NAC PacketFence offers customers a combined solution to ensure device compliance and security before and during network access.

October 22nd, 2014

San Francisco, CA – PacketFence today announced the release of version 4.5 of their Open Source network access control (NAC) solution, which includes integration with OPSWAT GEARS. This initiates a partnership between OPSWAT and Inverse, the developers of PacketFence. This integration allows customers to use OPSWAT GEARS and PacketFence together to gain enhanced visibility into device health status through GEARS and powerful network access control through PacketFence.PacketFence is an agent-less solution that provides network access control capabilities including powerful BYOD management options and guest access control, layer 7 traffic inspection, as well as remediation for endpoints violating security policies set in supported intrusion detection systems (IDS). In the release of PacketFence 4.5, the solution also now includes an initial easy integration with GEARS for device compliance management, especially providing device details not available with an agent-less solution.

“We are very excited to partner with OPSWAT to build this integration,” commented Ludovic Marcotte, CEO of Inverse. “The compliance checking capabilities that GEARS can offer PacketFence customers will allow them great visibility and control over the security of the devices that join their network.”

The GEARS platform provides visibility and remediation of the compliance state and security of devices. Administrators can define security policies around the required configuration of protection applications and systems settings, as well as define unwanted applications that should not be installed or running, and identify compromised or infected devices. The initial integration with GEARS allows PacketFence to force the installation of the GEARS client on endpoints during the on-boarding process. Moreover, PacketFence will ensure that the client is always correctly installed and operating before granting network access to endpoints. Administrators can then use GEARS to manage the compliance of devices and quickly identify issues and infections.

Similarly, GEARS customers can now take advantage of the initial integration with PacketFence to implement network access control capabilities with a robust, Open Source solution. Customers will soon be able to enforce that only compliant devices, as defined by their GEARS policy, are able to access their network, by using PacketFence for device registration, monitoring and isolation. PacketFence being Free and Open Source and GEARS’s free license for up to 25 devices, small businesses can now have enterprise-quality secure access control with zero capex.

OPSWAT’s VP of Business Development, Tom Mullen said “PacketFence is a fantastic enforcement complement to GEARS, and we look forward to working with Inverse to enable administrators to implement a wide variety of endpoint compliance enforcement options for both devices already on the network as well devices connecting to the networks managed by PacketFence.”
